High density, urban living – Gellerup, Århus

Type: School Assignment
When: 6th semester, spring 2008

About: High density, urban living – Gellerup, Århus

This was a self programmed assignment, with emphasize on the relation between living and housing. Space, home and building was to be investigated in relation to different target groups, each with their own special way of acting in city structures.

Due to peoples attraction of living in urban areas, the pressure on our cities is high and density is rising. How do we as architects solve those problems? Should we build high or densify existing structures?

The location for the assignment, where our proposal for a new settlement was to be developed, is a typical Scandinavian modernistic suburbian area, built in the 1970’s, in the spirit of Le Corbusier. The area consists of big recreational areas (not really in use) and a numerous of concret buildings between 4 and 8 levels high.

The semester started out with a workshop led by architect Walter Unterrainer from Austria, where the task was to develop and investigate different strategies for densifying the area.
