Red Delicious – Trøjborg, Århus
Type: School Assignment
When: 9th semester, spring 2010
About: Activity and culture for children – Trøjborg, Århus
This was a self-programmed assignment with focus on activity, movement and culture.
My intention with the project was to create an exciting physical form with interesting frames – an architecture that inspires people to be active, to play and to challange them selves. The building is unique with a significant expression – the red carpet and the polychrome windows. The building should not only attract people from the neighborhood, but people from other parts of the area aswell.
The house contains a range of different exciting and amusing activities, including both everyday activities and special events. The building is an active, vibrant and experience-oriented gathering place where people can come together regardless of age, activity, culture or lifestyle.
The concept for the building is a combination of movement and culture and it is intended primarily for children and young people, both individual and groups. To guarantee that many people with several interests can enjoy the house, I have worked with various zones and rhythms, all of which has its specific character. The house is functionally divided into six activity zones with different theme and intensity: puls – slow – mind – play – perform – food.
The zones are organized around the common area – the “heart” – that informs, locates, organizes and spreds the users. Just as arteries, that goes from the heart and provides the body with oxygen, the roads in the house spreads from the center and gives life to the building.
The way the rooms are linked together and the way the physical and visual contact between the levels and functions are designed should help to provide overview and insight. There is a large variation in plan and section, with fluid transitions between rooms of different sizes and a continuous sequence of compressed and open space with varying ceiling height and orientation – from the vast landscape down to the most intimate funtion.
There is room for both formal and informal activity and physical and mental challenge. The building should be a place you can visit regarless your interests – to be together with friends and family, meet new people, get a new hobby or perhaps “just to be”.
