“3iNord” Open competition, Norway – Vega

Type: Open competition – “3iNord”

When: Autumn 2008

Team: Collaboration with Kraft-værk Architects in Aarhus

About: Museums and tourism in northern Norway

Helgeland Museum in collaboration with TreFokus and NAL/Ecobox invites to 3 open competitions where museums are to be developed on the island of Vega, in the city of Mosjøen and in Grane bygdetun. The background for the competition is a wish to put more focus on the Norwegian culture and tourism and the industry connected to the forest and wood. The development of these museums should make the interest for the local traditions bigger. There is a wish for an architecture that combines old traditions with new knowledge about wood – so that the visitors will learn about the past, the present and the future.

Award: 2nd prize and 100.000 NOK

Vega is filled with contrasts – here you can find high mountains, low lands and forest and it is a home for many animals, birds and plants. It is so unique that UNESCO in July 2004 decided to put it on the World Heritage list.

The purpose with the competition is to develop a new and interesting architectural solution for a UNESCO World Heritage center on the the Vega Archipelago in northern Norway.

The program asks for an entrance hall/information, exhibition area, auditorium, rooms for education and layer.

The total area for the programed functions is aprox. 600 m2.
